This design in Aztec (Nahuatl) is "Xicalcoliuhqui," often called "step-fret" in English.The ring is built in three layers, each laid across the grain of the preceding layer, increasing the ring's durability threefold. The ring is sanded smooth before the design is burned into the surface of the ring, which is then smoothed and rubbed with a mix of natural oils and beeswax.
